NEW RECORD HIGH: AUSTRIAN POST GROUP TRANSPORTED CLOSE TO HALF A BILLION PARCELS IN 2021
217 MILLION PARCELS IN TURKEY ALONE – 16% INCREASE OVERALL FOR CEE SUBSIDIARIES

Austrian Post transported a record number of parcels in 2021, but not only in Austria itself. On balance, the Austrian Post Group delivered close to half a billion parcels in the past financial year, comprising a 9% rise year-on-year. However, Austria did not transport the most items in its domestic market of Austria in 2021 but in Turkey via its parcel subsidiary Aras Kargo, namely a total of 217 million parcels. In comparison, 184 million parcels were delivered by Austrian Post in Austria in the previous year, an increase of 11% from 2020.

On balance, Austrian Post transports parcels and pallets in nine countries i.e., Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovakia and Turkey. “Including all its subsidiaries, the parcel volumes handled by Austrian Post in 2021 amounted to 452 million items, the majority of which were delivered in Austria and Turkey. However, our subsidiaries in Central and Eastern Europe achieved enormous growth rates, registering an overall volume increase of 16%. We transported almost 52 million parcels in the region”, says Peter Umundum, Member of the Management Board of Austrian Post and Director of the Parcel & Logistics Division. He emphasized the fact that growth in foreign markets can be mainly attributed to the increasing trend towards e-commerce, similar to the situation in Austria.

“We are delighted by this new record level of parcels. For this purpose, we massively invested in our international network in order to be well-equipped in the future to handle corresponding volume increases,” Peter Umundum adds. “Furthermore, we are strongly focusing on customer orientation and convenient delivery solutions so that we will always be the first choice of senders as well as recipients.”

INVESTMENTS IN THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND CUSTOMER SOLUTIONS
For example, seven logistics centres in Turkey operated throughout the country by the Turkish subsidiary Aras Kargo were automated in 2021, serving as the basis for a 30% increase in sorting capacities. The existing out-of-home network was more than doubled to about 2,400 sites. The facilities to receive parcels were expanded at all subsidiaries and greater emphasis was placed on customer orientation. In total, 1,845 new sites for receiving parcels were put into operation in Southeast Europe in 2021.

The year 2022 will also feature targeted investments. For example, Express One will put new sorting facilities into operation in Hungary, whereas conveyor technology will be expanded in the Slovakian logistics centres and the number of automated parcel machines will be further increased in the entire CEE region. The sorting capacities of the logistics centres of Aras Kargo will be raised by a further 30% in 2022, and its delivery fleet will be expanded and modernised.
